Third subway construction resumes work

Process to be taken under ‘highest possible safety standards’

Since a drilling rig collapse claimed the life of a construction worker and injured five others at the site of York’s subway construction site just over a month ago, construction on another site has recommenced.

The construction site located near the Harry Arthur Commons of Keele campus and in front of the Ontario Archives Building has started up again as of November 11.

“There have been many concerns about [the] restart of construction with the accident that occurred,” explains Bud Purves, “President of the York University Development Corporation (YUDC). “But we have [made sure] that we verify safety concerns with the manufacturers of the safety audit.”

According to a press release posted by the Toronto York-Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE), the project was shut down October 11, concerning “general maintenance and preparation and equipment inspection”.

Since then, it says a common ground was reached after a plan was negotiated and agreed upon November 4. It stresses that the most adherent caution will be followed throughout the project.

Purves advises that the TYSSE information hub located in York Lanes is open “to hear what issues the community has” with regards to any aspect of the construction.
