An executive member of the York Federation of Students (YFS) is taking the leap into city politics as he gears up to run for the position of school board trustee in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

Robert Cerjanec, vp operations for the YFS, has been busy canvassing throughout the winter break in his home ward of Don Valley East, where he hopes to win the by-election for school board trustee.

“I’m very passionate about education,” says Cerjanec. “There’s stuff that I think we need to do on the secondary and primary education level.”

He says he believes primary and secondary education is flawed due to the difficulties related to providing resources for special education programs.

“When I’ve talked to folks in the riding […] it really opens up your eyes even more to the challenges that parents face with their child’s education,” says Cerjanec.

Some of those concerns included a lack of support for children with special needs.

When asked if this position would interfere with his role on the YFS, Cerjanec explains that this position, unlike other elected offices, is not considered to be full-time and most of the work takes place during the weekends and evenings.

“[This spot] would not impact my position on the YFS at all,” confirms Cerjanec. “If it means I get one or two less hours of sleep a night, so be it.”

The election is set to take place February 27 and the term will commence shortly thereafter.
