Multicultural week is set to commence February 12 as student clubs showcase their diversity on campus.
“We have a really diverse campus and it’s important to celebrate culture. This is an avenue for that,” explains Monirul Pathan, vp campus life for the York Federation of Students (YFS).
Spanning five days, the event will be begin with a volleyball tournament between the different clubs. Also slated to appear in a guest speaking session, “Expressions Against Oppression,” is Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X.
“It’s going to be a discussion of the myths of multiculturalism,” says Pathan, noting that the discussion will surround the issues of what the word means in the Canadian and European context.
While some clubs, such as Ahmadiyya Muslim Students Association (AMSA) at York are confused as to why they were not informed of the event, Pathan maintains that the YFS used e-mail, pamphlets, and word of mouth to advertise the week.
“It baffles me,” says Pathan of the fact that some clubs were not aware of the week. The week’s details, he says, are advertised via posters on campus and online.
In total, approximately 30 clubs will be participating in the week-long event.
