Partnering with the Canadian Institute of Mining, the Schulich School of Business has recently introduced a global mining management specialization into its MBA program.
The new specialization, available to students starting this 2012 to 2013 school year, is the first of its kind in North America and is aimed at MBA students who are interested in pursuing a career in the natural resources industry.
“An MBA specialization in mining is long overdue in preparing future business leaders for a key industry in Canada and around the world,” said Dezsö Horváth, dean of the Schulich School of Business.
“Canada continues to play a critical role in the global mining sector and Canadian mining companies are key players in responding to the unprecedented growth in demand for metals and minerals.”
Aside from the academic components of the program, students will also be required to complete a real-world, strategic consulting project at a mining company as part of this specialization.
However, because of the controversies facing many natural resources industries, Ross says the primary goal of such a specialization is to teach future managers the importance of acting as responsible stewards of the world’s valuable resources.
According to Richard Ross, one of the creators of the specialization, the Canadian Institute of Mining approached Schulich because of its reputation as a school focused on sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
