Listen up gentlemen.
We’ve had some issues in the past – you know, with some of you guys not exactly getting “the message.” You know what I’m talking about, don’t even pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about.
Yeah, you there – I’m talking to you. You there in your new t-shirt that says “YOLO” or “SWAG”. Or even you there, in the skinny jeans and Wal-Mart sunglasses.
First off, your shirt is silly and you put on way too much cologne today. Secondly, when you approach girls here at school, try to be a gentleman about it.
I get it, sort of. You want to meet new people. You’re excited to be here, there are some girls here that you just might think are attractive. And I want you to understand this – there really isn’t a problem with you talking to girls.
What I do have a problem with is the lack of respect I see you boys here dishing out to the girls at York.
You have to pick up on the messages. Things like, “I have a boyfriend,” or “I’m really kind of busy tonight” are all signs you should take seriously. They could mean that this girl just really isn’t into you, or you are coming on a bit too strong. Either way, the best course of action isn’t keep bugging her, my best suggestion is to back off.
Do you want creep status? No, of course you don’t. So heed my warning, smarten the fuck up.
I’m not really into this scene – I’ve had a girlfriend for quite a while and I’d like to keep it that way. But I see some of you boys being a bit pushy on campus, and it makes me totally sick. I don’t see why this campus can’t be a safe place for everyone. I don’t understand why we can’t improve York’s reputation as a community.
Sorry to single you out boys, but this is how it has to be.
I strongly suggest everyone, guys and girls – head out to the “You Had Me At Consent” event going on at the Rexall Centre on Tuesday, September 3. It starts at 6:00 p.m., get there a bit early for a good seat.
Hosted by the Centre for Human Rights, this relationship and sexual assault awareness seminar features talks from former NFL and CFL quarterback Don McPherson. Hopefully after you take part in this event you’ll get a better look at the bigger picture and help you navigate yourself through your first year at York. You’ll learn something new, I promise.
Plus, there will be a barbeque. Sex talks and barbeques, isn’t that reason enough for you to go?
But otherwise, have some fun. Meet some people, make some new friends and try to show some respect. It pays off in the long run.
Otherwise, I’ll be back. Trust me, you won’t want that.
