The search for York’s eighth president and vice-chancellor continues.
Five community consultations have been scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday next week at Keele and Glendon campuses as York solicits feedback in the presidential search.
The Senate Executive committee will consult with faculty councils and Senate committees, and by the end of April, Senate will vote on a statement to the search committee, which will inform the next stages of its deliberations, according to Janice Walls, York media.
Senate is expected to discuss the contents of an advisory statement for the Presidential Search Committee at its March meeting.
The Presidential Search Committee asks community members what makes York different from other universities and the strengths it should build on. Students are also invited to comment on the challenges and opportunities they see York facing, as well as goals and priorities for the next president.
While the work of the Presidential Search Committee is confidential, committee membership is public, comprising six governors, two students, and several professors and deans for a total of 14 members. Seven were nominated by both the Senate and the Board of Governors.
A new president is expected to be appointed by 2017. York has yet to announce the criteria to be used in determining candidates’ qualifications. Walls says information gathered from the consultations will feed into the development of criteria to be used in the search.
“In order to ensure a representative group within the seven members from Senate, faculties were grouped together to choose their representatives,” says Walls.
“So, for example, the health and science faculties were grouped together and will have one representative on the presidential search committee. In addition to nominating five members this way, Senate also nominated two students, who are included in the list of 14 members,” she adds.
In September of last year, York issued a call for student and faculty representatives to join the Presidential Search Committee.
