The men’s volleyball team was in search of their first win of the season, while the women were looking to improve their record from 2-1 against Ryerson this past Saturday.

The Lionesses played first, but it was the Rams who opened the scoring in the first set. Ryerson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, until Celeste Witzell got a kill for York to give them their first point of the match.

Ryerson would take the next six-straight points to give the Rams a 9-1 lead. Both teams would trade points from there, until Ryerson would go on a 7-0 tear to make the score 19-5. The Rams would go on to take the set by a score of 25-10.

The second set started out more smoothly, as both teams were tied at five. Ryerson’s offense would get a jump-start from Cailin Wark en route to a 15-8 lead. The Rams never looked back from there, as they would go on to take the set by a score of 25-11.

This meant York needed to win the third set to force a fourth. This set was by far the most exciting, as both teams would trade points, with neither able to get the upper hand. With the score tied at 24-24, Ryerson’s Cadence Currie got the kill to give the Rams a one-point advantage. York’s Sarah Williams was able to get the kill for the Lionesses and extend the match for at least another two points. York took the lead on the next point thanks to a bad set by Ryerson’s Kate McIlmoyle. The Rams would go on to score the next three points to take the set and the match.

With another loss to U of T on Sunday, the Lionesses are now 2-3 on the season.

The men played next, and the first set was relatively even through the first 30 points, with York owning a narrow four-point edge. York would go on to win the set 25-19.

In the second set, the Lions jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but the Rams battled back to even the score at eight. Both teams would trade points from there en route to tie at 18 points apiece. York would once again outlast the Rams and take the set by a score of 25-21.

This put the Lions just 25 points away from their first win of the season. The third set was similar to the first two, as neither team could pull away in the first 30 points, with York holding a narrow 16-14 lead. However, York would take the next four-straight points to make the score 20-14, leading them to a match-ending 25-18 victory.

With another win over U of T on Sunday, the Lions are now 2-2 on the season.

York’s next games will be in Peterborough on Saturday against Trent. The women’s game will be starting at 6 p.m., while the men’s will be starting at 8 p.m.
