Daughter’s Music From Before the Storm provides a different musical perspective to those who listen to more mainstream content.

The U.K. indie folk band takes a unique approach, offering us a more in-depth way to see the world. From the first song, “Glass,” to the last, “A Hole in the Earth,” Daughter gives you a little bit of everything, and more. Each track is distinctively thrilling and haunting, yet powerful and mellow.

The album contains many songs with only instrumentals, enhancing the listener’s emotions. The soothing “ahs” and “oohs” in some songs elicit a more vulnerable mood, while others make you feel like you’re on top of the world. It’s not simple to decode, yet listeners can still connect to its unwavering depth.

This kind of oxymoron in tone is truly exemplified through “Flaws.” It starts off on an emotional note, emphasized by a bittersweet piano melody, then transcends into a haunting, angelic guitar solo. “Flaws” quickly goes from being peaceful to chaotic, creating an allegory to life as a rollercoaster.

“Their music is quite melodramatic. It’s soothing, but not something that will cheer you up. I would definitely listen to something like this if it’s raining and I’m feeling down, but not something that I would listen to all the time,” says Ahmar Azfaal, a fourth-year Marketing student at York.

Daughter’s album is not everyone’s forte, but it without a doubt gives listeners a refreshing perspective to music and the world—a good break from all of today’s that espouse around sex, money, and fame.

Christina Arcena Andaya, a fourth-year Interdisciplinary Social Science student at York, disliked “Burn It Down”, but thoroughly enjoyed “Glass.”

“I’m not a big fan of ‘Burn It Down.’ When I read the lyrics while the music played, I visualized that I was taken to a dark place, filled with sorrow and pain. But I ended up adoring ‘Glass,’ even though it didn’t have any lyrics. It reminded me of someone winning a victory for overcoming their obstacles. Plus, I can imagine this song playing at the end of a movie while the credits are rolling,” she says.

Music From Before the Storm is an original album that will hug your soul whenever you listen to it. It uses all of the most pleasing and enchanting musical techniques, such as the fade out, sweeping you away into a world you’ll never want to leave. Although the album can be somber at times, it still allows people to think about the impact that music has on their lives. You might not be a big indie folk fan yourself, however Music might just end up surprising you in more ways than one.
