York headed to its 41st annual Red & Blue Bowl Sept. 18, but unfortunately came up short after the final blow from the whistle.

In a scoreless first quarter, both teams vied to be the first one up on the scoreboard, but it wasn’t until the second quarter that the University of Toronto Varsity Blues finally made the point. U of T star quarterback Andrew Gillis made an impressive run on the field for a three-yard touchdown.

The Lions retaliated by making a field goal that would change the score to 7-3. By half-time, York’s  rival led the score 14-3 after rookie Aaron Milton made his debut in scoring a touchdown.  The Lions could not stop Gillis as he scored his second touchdown of the day in the third quarter, making him the leader in point scoring o his team.

The fierce battle between Toronto rivals Blues and Lions raged on in the last quarter as York was determined to even the score. The Lions’ Dallas Smith, a first-year player on the team, recorded York’s first touchdown of the season after running past the Varsity Blues’ offensive-line. His touch-down preceded several attempts to catch up to the Varsity Blues, but only Alex Bugdahn was able to  score the second touchdown and make the final score 24-19.

Though the team has yet to find a win in the season, the York Lions were able to overcome a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter, showing the first signs of life all season long. The York Lions are set to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks   Sept. 25.
