The Lions men’s hockey team took on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in back-to-back games this weekend, winning both.
On Friday, the first period finished scoreless. The second period, however, saw York’s Reid Jackman complete a hat trick with goals in the 2nd, 9th, and 15th minutes. The Thunderwolves responded with a goal of their own in the 20th minute, cutting the Lions’ lead to 3-1.
In the third, the Thunderwolves cut into the Lions’ lead once again, but York added a pair of goals, courtesy of Scott Feser and Nick Zottl, making the score 5-2, which would become the final.
The Lions produced another dominant performance against Lakehead on Saturday. The game began again with a scoreless first period, but came to life in the second period with a goal from Lions’ Justin Maiolino in the 1st minute. The Thunderwolves replied with two goals to take a 2-1 lead by the end of the second period.
York turned the tables in the third, as they made an incredible comeback. Daniel Nikandrov was the first to score in the 6th minute, followed by Feser who gave York the lead in the 12th minute. In the 13th minute, Jack Goranson provided some insurance. York went on to win the game 4-2.
The Lions’ women, on the other hand, had a bittersweet weekend, beating the Windsor Lancers on Friday, 6-1, and losing in a shootout to the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday.
On Friday, Christina Chin and Jenna Gray opened the score in the first period for York. Lancer’s Emma Welburn responded with what would be Windsor’s only goal of the game in the 16th minute. The first half ended 3-1 for York as Kara Washer scored in the last minute of the first period.
The second period saw power play goals from Kelsey McHolm and Taylor Davinson in the 13th and 14th minutes respectively.Leah Hibbert scored the last goal of the game in the 3rd period, as the game ended in a 6-1 victory for York.
Saturday’s game was tightly contested, as neither side would give up. York’s McHolm opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the first period. In the second period, the Lakers responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead. York’s Chelsea Tucker, however, responded with a goal in the 7th minute to level the score at 2-2.
The third period saw an astounding 11 saves from Lions’ goalie Lauren Dubie. As neither team was able to score the winner, the game went to overtime, which solved nothing, and then a shootout. Unfortunately the Lakers got the best of the Lions, as they won by a score of 3-2.
The men play a pair of home games on Friday and Saturday against Windsor and Laurier at 7 p.m. The women will be at Nipissing on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and then at home against Brock on Sunday at 2 p.m.
