The School of Arts, Media, Performance, and Design at York will have an exhibition featuring the work of Iranian-Canadian artist Sara Niroobakhsh on September 5 until December 6 that focuses on her experiences in Iran.
The title of the exhibition is We are Here: Sara Niroobakhsh. It replants the artist’s cultural roots and creative experiences in Canada as an immigrant. The descriptions of her works involve a lively medium and context that consume varying spaces in time and space. Those art pieces challenge the framework of contemporary art as they continue to grow intricately.
Furthermore, there are two curators involved in this project. They are Jenna Shamoon and Maria Won. Shamoon is an alumni of York who received a diploma in Curatorial Practice and MA in Art History. On the other hand, Won is currently a graduate candidate of the same degree path as Shamoon.
I, Saffron is one of the works of art that will be exhibited in the university. It resembles the Persian cuisine in terms of its poetic nature and rigorous work. It uses grains of rice that have a Saffron ink which in turn used in writing Farsi text. Saffron is a pertinent component of Iranian dishes. However, producing one kilogram of it requires 70,000 flowers. This kind of work is usually done by women.
Nevertheless, Niroobakhsh moved to Canada in 2014 from Iran. It is said that most of her works have a focus on Iranian culture and her experiences in migration. Her heritage is further explored when she continued to work on performance, sculpture, photography and video. The media that she uses include traditional and non-traditional ones that enable her to captivate observations of nature, womanhood and language.
The exhibition will have its formal reception on September 26, 2019 at 6:00pm. Its location will be at the Joan Goldfarb Visual Arts Study Centre of York.
