Lions show significant progress despite tough loss to Ottawa

(Shawn Commey)

On August 31, the Lions kicked off the football season with a 27-4 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in a game that marked the debut of new Head Coach Dexter Janke. Despite the final score, there were several silver linings, with the Lions showing significant signs of improvement, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

This game marked the lowest point total allowed by the Lions since 2021, reflecting Janke’s defensive pedigree from his time with the Westshore Rebels. The improved defense was a key talking point during the post-game press conference, where Janke credited Defensive Coordinator Greg Knox for the unit’s solid performance.

Regarding the Lions’ defensive performance, Janke stated, “That’s a testament to Coach Knox. [He] has done a great job with the group and [his] expertise allows me to focus on the culture pieces and team dynamics.”

There were glimpses of progress in the offense as well. Quarterback Matt Linn completed 16 of 28 passes, showcasing poise and promise even though the Lions couldn’t find the end zone.

Reflecting on his first game leading the Lions, Janke expressed his excitement about the energy surrounding the program: “It felt great. There was an engaged and enthusiastic support group and system here. At no point did I feel like I was leading this group alone.”

Looking ahead, the Lions are set to host the Windsor Lancers after falling short to the Queens Gaels this past Saturday. While the season is just beginning, the Lions are clearly on a path of growth, with Janke and his staff working to instill a new culture and identity. The road ahead will be tough, but York’s early-season resilience and flashes of potential suggest that this is a team ready to fight — and ready to improve.
