After a blowout loss to Laurier, York’s football team was back in action Saturday against the winless Windsor Lancers, beating them by a score of 56-32.

After their best start to a season in over eight years, the Lions were hit with a reality check when they were crushed by the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo. The Lions were only able to muster three points last week, courtesy of veteran kicker Nick Naylor, in a game that ended 74-3.

On Saturday, York got on the board with eight minutes to go in the first quarter from a Naylor field goal to make the score 3-1.

The first touchdown of the game came with a little over two minutes left in the first, courtesy of running back Jesse Amankwaa, who ran in the touchdown from the one-yard line.

Windsor opened the scoring in the second quarter with a touchdown just two minutes in to make the score 10-8, in favour of the Lions.

York answered back less than four minutes later with a 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brett Hunchak to receiver Nikola Kalinic.

That would be it for the half, as the Lions took an 18-11 lead into the break.

The Lions opened the scoring in the third quarter on a one-yard run by running back Kayden Johnson.

Near the end of the third quarter, a Hunchak-to-Hunchak connection made the score 38-11, as quarterback Brett hit his brother — and receiver — Colton for a 59-yard touchdown pass.

That would put the game out of reach for Windsor, as the Lions went on to win by a final score of 56-32.

York is now 2-1 on the season and currently sit in 6th place in the OUA. However, they have a tough road to the playoffs. Three of their next four games are against Ottawa, McMaster, and Carleton, all of whom have winning records and are ahead of York in the standings.

The Lions next game is against their cross-town rival, the winless U of T, at Varsity Stadium next Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
