The Lions soccer teams added two more wins to their records this week after beating the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines by a combined score of 8-2.
As always, the women played first, and they came out to a rough start after giving up the first goal of the game to Brock just four minutes in.
However, the Lions would answer 10 minutes later on Farkhunda Muhtaj’s first goal of the season.
Eight minutes later, Nour Ghoneim, who has been dominant this season, found the back of the net for her league-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead into the break that would become the final score.
The men’s game wasn’t nearly as close, as the Lions offense feasted on the weaker Badgers, belching out six goals en route to a 6-1 drubbing.
Cristian Cavallini scored the first two goals of the game just minutes apart: the first came in the 15th minute unassisted, while the second came in the 24th minute and was assisted by Jonathan Lao.
Milan Beader added another goal to York’s lead 10 minutes later, which was unassisted.
York opened the scoring in the second half as well, courtesy of Eddie Lay’s first goal of the season, assisted by Cavallini.
Two minutes later, in the 55th minute, Cavallini completed a hat trick with his third goal of the game.
Brock would break the shutout in the 71st minute courtesy of Nathan Briglio, but York’s Matt Arnone put the game out of reach with his first goal of the season six minutes later.
Both the men’s and women’s teams remain unbeaten, as the men are 10-0-2 on the season and the women are 9-0-3. With only four games left in the regular season, it’s entirely possible they could complete the season without a loss.
It’s now been more than a year since the men last experienced the bitter taste of defeat, as their last loss came in September 2015.
The Lions will finish their season at home, with all four final games taking place at York. Their next games are Wednesday against Guelph at 6 p.m. for the women and 8:15 p.m. for the men. On Sunday, they’ll be taking on Brock again at 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., respectively.
