The men’s and women’s basketball teams were on the road this weekend with a pair of games against the Lancers and Mustangs.

On Friday, York visited Windsor to take on the Lancers. The Lions were looking for a strong performance to gain some ground in the standings, but it was the Lancers who opened the scoring and went on a 5-1 run to start the quarter.

York looked flat in the opening frame, as the Lancers would close the quarter with a 14-point lead. The Lions showed some more fight in the second, but were unable to cut into the Lancer lead, and the score was 45-28 going into halftime.

York continued to battle in the third, as they opened the quarter with a 6-2 run, and would cut the lead to 16 by the end of the quarter.

In the fourth, the Lancers looked to have the win in the bag, but the Lions showed some character by refusing to roll over, and they closed the game on a 23-5 run.

Unfortunately, the Lions comeback attempt fell just short, and the Lancers would take the game by a score of 83-78.

York’s leading scorer was Brandon Ramirez, who scored 31 points on 13 of 19 shots, including 33 per cent from beyond the arc. Ramirez also grabbed 15 rebounds for the double-double.

The Lionesses were playing the red-hot Lancers, who looked every bit as good as their 7-1 record would suggest.

The Lancers opened the game with a 15-2 run and never looked back. Windsor won every quarter, and York was only able to muster 46 points to the Lancers’ 80. The Lionesses’ leading scorer was Ishanaa Seupersadsingh, who put up 12 points on five of nine shots and had a pair of rebounds.

The Lions also dropped Sunday’s game against the Western Mustangs by a score of 81-71. The Lions are now 2-6 on the season, as they’ve lost their last six games in a row.

The Lionesses had a bounce-back game against the Mustangs, as they came out to an 8-2 run en route to a 14-7 first quarter. The Lionesses would continue their dominance in the second, opening the quarter with a 7-2 run and taking a 21-11 lead into halftime.

Both teams came out firing in the third in what was by far the most exciting quarter of the game, with both teams putting up 18 points. Western would cut into York’s lead in the fourth, but it was too little, too late, and the Lionesses would take the game by a score of 48-41.

The Lionesses’ leading scorer was Shauney Fischer, who put up 20 points on eight of 12 shots with 10 rebounds and two assists in a double-double effort.

Despite the win, the women are still fourth in their division with just four points, six behind third-place U of T.

Both teams are back home next weekend when they’ll be taking on their cross-town rivals, U of T and Ryerson, on Friday and Saturday. The men will be playing at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., while the women tip off at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
