It was a tough week for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as they had four games and four losses between them.

On Wednesday, the Lions and Lionesses were on the road, though they didn’t have to go very far, as they were taking on the Ryerson Rams.

York started out hot in the women’s game, as they put up 19 in the first quarter and took a five-point lead into the second.

They continued their hot shooting in the second, putting up another 22 points to Ryerson’s 19, giving them an eight-point lead at the half.

However, in the third quarter, things started to fall apart. Ryerson came out of the break firing, while York couldn’t continue their shooting success from the first half, and the Rams cut the York lead down to just three points going into the fourth.

The wheels fell off for the Lionesses in the fourth quarter. Ryerson opened the quarter with a 10-0 run and never looked back, limiting York to just seven in the final frame, putting up 20 of their own.

It was a tale of two halves for the Lionesses. Despite improving on their free-throw percentage in the second, their field goal percentage dropped from 47 per cent in the first half to just 30 in the second.

York’s leading scorer was Ishanaa Seupersadsingh, who put up 12 points to go along with eight boards, a pair of assists and a pair of steals. The game ended 71-61.

The men’s game was the opposite, starting off poorly and never recovering.

The Lions only managed six points in the first, compared to Ryerson’s 13. However, it was the second quarter where the Rams put the game out of reach. Ryerson held the Lions to just 10 while scoring 29 in an offensive onslaught.

York would outscore Ryerson in the fourth, but it was too little, too late, as the Rams were able to coast off their dominance in the first half.

York’s leading scorer was Yonathan Kristos, who came off the bench to put up 12 points on five of seven shooting from the field and 100 per cent from beyond the arc. The game ended 79-53.

York’s road trip continued to U of T on Friday.

Both teams suffered double-digit losses, as the third quarter proved disastrous for the men and women. U of T put up a combined 51 points in the third to York’s 27.

The leading scorer for the men was Brandon Ramirez, who put up a double-double effort with 22 points, 10 boards, an assist and a steal on nine-of-17 shooting from the field, including 50 per cent from deep.

Seupersadsingh again led the Lionesses in scoring, with 17 points on seven-of-17 shooting to go along with seven boards, an assist and a pair of steals.

With only three games left, neither team is likely to make the playoffs, and will play for pride the rest of the season.
