The men’s and women’s volleyball teams played their final games of the season last weekend.

Both teams were looking to end their season on a high note and go into the playoffs with confidence. Standing in their way? Their cross-town rival, the U of T Varsity Blues.

The women looked a little rusty in the first set, only managing eight points en route to the 25-8 defeat. In the second set, their offense had more of a spark, as they managed 19 points. However, it wasn’t enough, as they found themselves in an 0-2 hole through the first two sets.

However, they were able to rally in the third, as they took it by a score of 25-21, and forced at least one more.

York’s hot streak continued in the following set, as their defense tightened up and they held the Blues to just 19 points en route to the 25-19 victory, which forced a fifth and final set.

Unfortunately the Lions comeback effort stalled in the fifth, as their offense only managed five points in the 15-5 defeat.

Despite the loss, the women will still have a chance to compete for the Quigley Cup, as they finished fourth in the OUA.

The men needed a win to tie Ryerson for first in the division with 24 points. With no chance of catching third-place Queen’s, the Blues were playing for pride.

The Lions played like every bit of the top-tier team they are, as they cruised to an easy 3-0 victory.

Both teams will advance to the OUA playoffs next week, with their games and opponents still to be determined.
