Fortnite has recently taken the world by storm. It seems like everyone has either played or heard of the game. So what is it, and why has it captured the minds of people across the globe, where they live, breathe and play Fortnite?
It is an online video game with over 125 million players, and essentially like any other classic violent game, revolves around shooting the enemy. With Fortnite increasing in popularity every day, it is important to familiarize oneself with the health repercussions of video game overindulgence.
Video game addiction is a rapidly growing disorder. It has links to distinct behavioural changes that are attributed to and/or caused by excessive or compulsive use of video games. According to the World Health Organization, video game addiction is characterized by a “continuous or recurrent” pattern of playing. An addict prioritizes their game time over all other aspects of their life. They eventually lose control of how much and for how long they play.
There are emotional symptoms to look for, such as: feelings of restlessness when unable to play; constantly thinking about previous games or anticipation of upcoming sessions; lying to others about time played; and lastly, isolation from others to spend more time gaming. The physical signs of video game addiction include, but are not limited to, fatigue, migraines, and poor personal hygiene.
Video game overindulgence can have detrimental effects on both physical and mental health. Video game addicts are known to have higher rates of depression and anxiety, along with lower grades in school.
They are also prone to experiencing shifts in personality characteristics, with an increase in recklessness, aggression and neuroticism.
This type of addiction can also lead to financial, social and familial problems. With individuals spending so much time gaming, they may neglect their responsibilities, take too many sick days from work or school, ignore their friends, and neglect familial duties.
Although, not all video games are shown to have negative effects. Games such as brain teasers that are designed to enhance problem-solving techniques are one example of the positive effect video games may have on people.
