After an eight-week season, the York Lions men’s football team will be hanging up their jerseys for the year after their 52-14 loss in Kingston against the Queen’s Gaels.
Receiver Jonelle Tolbert started the game by putting the Lions on the board first, with a touchdown from quarterback Nick Coutu. Alex Bugdahn added to the score with his own touchdown of the game.
The York Lions began the season under a new head coach, Warren Craney, who came to York having spent the past seven seasons as a defensive coordinator for Concordia University.
During Craney’s time as Concordia coach, his athletes won four out of six presidents’ trophies, the J. P. Metras Trophy and 13 first-team all-Canadian awards.
This season, several players were acknowledged for their efforts on the York team including Jacob Appiah, Michael Boyd and Boris Radulovic. Last year, Appiah was the team’s leading rusher, with a total of 405 yards across the field.
Boyd, a defensive safety player has made a significant impact on the field with three team interceptions and 33 tackles. Radulovic, having been with the team for five years, has shown great leadership on and off the field.
The team will begin their new season next fall.
