York’s Women’s Volleyball
In a tough five-set match between the York Lions and the Windsor Lancers on Jan. 9, the Lions managed to pull off a 3-2 victory, beating the Lancers 25-12, 25-23, 26-28, 16-25, 15-11. York began the match strong, winning handily by a large gap, but lost momentum near the end of the sets, something that almost cost them a second loss this week. The women are still first in the standings with a 9-1 record after losing their first match of the season to the Western Mustangs on Jan. 8. Player of the match went to third-year veteran Kristina Vlcek, who came out strong and finished with 19 points and 12 kills.
York Women’s Hockey
The York Lions’ women’s hockey team returned from the break with a 3-1 loss to the Brock Badgers Jan. 8. A slow game moving forward into the match, the York Lions played with a fatigued approach. The Badgers, having already beaten the Lions twice this season by scores of 4-2 and 6-2, were able to once again add to their overall record of 15-3. After continuous penalties
and a final goal from Brock player Kelly Walker in the last few minutes of the third period, the Lions were faced with their first loss of the new year. York Lions head coach Dan Church noted the loss came about because they were not able to capitalize on opportunities throughout the game.
York’s Men’s Hockey
Continuing their regular season, the York Lion’s men’s hockey team surpassed the odds on Jan. 9 with a big 4-1 win against the Waterloo Warriors. Fifth-year player Jesse Grespan put the Lions up first with a power play goal in the last few minutes of the first period. The scoring ended in the favour of the York Lions after second-year forward Jaskirat Gill put in a last minute goal in an empty net. This is the Lions’ first win back from the break, and it improves their record to 6-13-0 in the season.
York Men’s Volleyball
Team captain Karim Khalil propelled the York Lions to a 3-0 win on Jan. 9 against the Windsor Lancers at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The outside-hitter finished the game with 12 kills and seven digs against his opponents and created enough of an advantage for the Lions to take the win home. With persistent determination, the York Lions surpassed the Windsor Lancers easily 25-20, 25-8 and 25-23. Teamwork from Gregory Ivan, Nikola Sandic and Felipe Humaña-Paredes pushed the York Lions to achieve their third win in the season and move to a 3-9 record.
