York Men’s Volleyball
In a tie-breaking set, the York Lions came up short to end the match with a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Jan. 16. The Lions started off strong in the first set against their opponent and came back in the fourth to make the match a five-set showdown. In the last set, Varsity Blues was able to edge right past the Lions after strong hits by veteran player Adam Palmer proved to be too much for the Lions. The Lions are now 4-10 in the standings, right behind Ryerson and Waterloo University.
York Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team was outdone in the very last second by the Ryerson Rams Jan. 15 to make the final score 73-72 in the favour of the Rams. The Lions were down by 11 points in the beginning of the match with strong defence by Ryerson’s Ola Adegboruwa. York would work their way up in the second and third quarter until the Rams took the win by just one point. Baskets and rebounds made by Ryerson in the last quarter gave the team the advantage and the win by the time the whistle blew. The Lions now sit fourth in the standings with six wins and seven losses.

York Men’s Hockey

After a 5-2 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Jan. 13, the York Lions came back with a close 5-4 win against the UOIT Ridgebacks the following Saturday. Goals by Chad Hohmann and Rhys Thornton in the second period allowed the Lions to gain momentum and surpass the Ridgebacks’ defence. Forward Adam Stuart made the last goal with an assist by Jaskirat Gill and Riley Brand. The one goal was enough to keep the Lions in the lead and overcome the Ridgebacks, who sit just ahead of the Lions in the standings. The Lions are set to face the Ridgebacks once again in hopes of closing in on the other teams on the standings.
York Women’s Hockey
The Queen’s Gaels women’s hock- ey team handed a rough 6-2 loss to the York Lions Jan. 15 at the Kings- ton Memorial Centre. The match started off in Queen’s favour as three goals were put in past goalie Sydney McMurter, who was later replaced by Sydney Brown. The early lead Queen’s had – and the consistent goaltending by Gaels goalie Karissa Savage – proved to be too much of an obstacle for the Lions to overcome. The loss marks York’s twelfth of the season, and keeps the York lions seventh in the standings.
