The York Lions men’s soccer team scored a 2-0 victory in their match against the Guelph Gryphons at York Stadium on October 11.

Lions’ Head Coach Carmine Isacco was proud to say his team performed well despite some troubles with injuries.

“We got in behind them early and we probably should have scored a little more, but we’re not used to not having the ball all the time, so it was a good change of pace,” says Isacco.

With help from Tyrone Downes, striker Joey Cicchillo scored the team’s first goal in the 27th minute to put the Lions ahead 1-0.

The Gryphons responded to the goal with a strong offensive push, but failed to tally a goal in the first half.
After 32 minutes of scoreless play in the second half, York midfielder Ben Futoriansky put one by the keeper to secure a 2-0 victory for the Lions.

The Lions maintained an unbreakable defence as Guelph pressed for a goal late in the game. York’s goalkeeper Sotiri Varlokostas made a series of difficult saves, even taking a blow to the head as a member of the Gryphons jumped over him while making a catch.
Along with their match against Guelph, York took on the Laurier Golden Hawks on the Thanksgiving weekend, coming away with a hard-fought 2-2 draw. The Lions’ record now stands at 10-2-1 with just a few games remaining before the playoffs.
York hits the pitch again October 16 in a night game at Vaso’s Field against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.
