This weekend wasn’t great for both York hockey teams as the men lost 8-3 to Ryerson on Friday, while the women lost 5-3 to U of T on Saturday.

The men’s game was highly anticipated, as the top two teams in the OUA West, the Lions and Rams, faced-off for the first time this season.

York’s Morgan Messenger opened the scoring in the 6th minute on the powerplay, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. However, the Rams were able to answer back in the 18th minute, evening the score at 1-1. Then, less than a minute later, Ryerson scored their second unanswered goal, taking a 2-1 lead with them into the first intermission.

York levelled the score in the second period, as Josh LaFrance scored on another power play in the 12th minute. The Rams, however, responded with a goal of their own taking a 3-2 lead.

In the third, the Lions tied the game once again, courtesy of Stefano Pezzetta, but it was all for naught, as the Rams put the game to bed with five unanswered goals, en route to an 8-3 victory.

On Saturday, the women stumbled out of the gate against the U of T Varsity Blues, conceding two goals in the first, as they trailed by two going into intermission.

In the second period, York made a comeback, evening the score with two brilliant goals from Kelsey McHolm and Kara Washer. The Blues, however, responded with two goals of their own, ending the frame with a 4-2 lead.

Leah Hibbert cut into the Blues’ lead in the third, but it was too little too late, as U of T added another insurance goal, en route to the 5-3 victory.
