York’s men’s volleyball team hosted five other teams at the Tait McKenzie Center over the weekend for the annual Excalibur Tournament. The teams invited were the Humber Hawks, Nipissing Lakers, Queen’s Gaels, Guelph Gryphons, and Western Mustangs.
Each team played three games in a round-robin format, with the York Lions taking on the Humber Hawks on Friday, the Western Mustangs on Saturday, and the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday.
The ‘Stangs emerged champions after defeating all three of their opponents, including a 3-1 win over the Lions on Saturday. The Lions also lost both of their other games, first against the Humber Hawks on Friday by three sets to two, and on Sunday by the same score, in a poor opening weekend showing.
The Mustangs were crowned champions for the fourth time in the tournament’s history. The Lions, who last won the tournament in 2016, will use the experience as invaluable preparation for the second half of their OUA season
The Lions men’s and women’s teams will return to action on January 12, when they will visit their cross-town rival, the Ryerson Rams. The women play at 2 p.m. while the men play at 4 p.m.
