The Lions men’s and women’s hockey teams travelled to Windsor to face the Lancers last weekend. The men lost 5-3, while the women won 3-1. The men also hosted the Brock Badgers on Sunday, losing again by a score of 3-1.
The men’s game on Friday started well, as York scored the the only goal of the first period, courtesy of Justin Bean, who opened the scoring in the seventh minute, assisted by Morgan Messenger and Stefano Pezzetta.
The second period was, however, dominated by the Lancers, as they scored two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead going into the final frame.
In the third, both teams left it all out on the ice in search of the win, but it was the Lancers who emerged victorious. The Lions temporarily took the lead by scoring two unanswered goals of their own. Bean scored again in the fifth minute, this time assisted by Scott Feser. Sal Filice then scored York’s third goal in the eighth minute, assisted by Bradley Forrest and Alex Mowbray.
The Lancers were, however, not to be outdone, retaking the lead with under 10 minutes to play before adding some insurance late, taking a 5-3 lead which shortly became the final score.
The women faced the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, and got a little revenge for their male counterparts, winning the game 3-1.
The game started slowly with a scoreless first period. Lions goalie Eva Hall proved key, saving the Lancers 10 shots in the period.
The second was looking like more of the same until Brooke Anderson scored for the Lions, assisted by Kelsey McHolm with 58 seconds left in the period to give the Lions a 1-0 lead going into the second intermission.
The Lancers came out strong in the third, tying the game 1-1 in the fourth minute, but the Lions responded, scoring their second goal six minutes later courtesy of Madison Davey, assisted by Ellen Donaldson.
The Lions sealed their 3-1 win with under five minutes left in regulation, as Kara Washer found the back of the net, assisted by Erin Locke.
Against Brock on Sunday, the men struggled, eventually losing 3-1. The first period was scoreless despite a flurry of attempts from both sides.
Though the Badgers opened the scoring with under three minutes to play in the second, the Lions knotted things up just over a minute later, courtesy of Peter de Coppi, assisted by Justin Maiolino and Nik Coric.
Brock put the game out of reach in the third, with two quick goals just a minute apart.
The women have an action-packed week starting tonight at Canlan Ice Sports against the Ryerson Rams at 7:30 p.m. The women also host Queens on Friday, at 7 p.m., and then go across town the next day to face their local rivals, the Varsity Blues, at 3 p.m.
The men, travel to St Catharines on Saturday to face the Brock Badgers at 7:15 p.m. They then return back to town the next day to host the Ryerson Rams at 7 p.m.
