The Lions women’s rugby team hosted the Trent Excalibur for their home opener Friday night at Alumni Field. The Lions came into the match riding on their tremendous victory over the Varsity Blues the previous weekend and were looking to add another to the win column. The Lions accomplished just that, defeating Trent 17-7.

The Lions got off to an early lead following breakaways from Chanelle Lindegaard and Michela Stratton, which allowed teammates Rayann D’Aguiar and Erin Preston to score tries. After Natasha Naismith’s conversion, the Lions were up 12-0 over Trent after the first half.

Early in the second half, Trent’s Caleigh McMillan was able to blast through to the Lions’ end to get Trent onto the board. Her teammate Maddy Honnells would add a successful conversion to close the Lions’ lead to five points at 12-7.

This was as high as Trent would climb on the scoreboard though as second-year Bernice Ediagbonya would add another try for the Lions, which boosted the Lions’ lead to 17-7 for the final score.

Next, the undefeated Lions will head to Waterloo on Sunday, September 15 to take on the Waterloo Warriors. The Lions will return to Alumni Field on Friday, September 27 to host the Laurier Golden Hawks at 7 p.m.
