The York Lions women’s soccer team has had a busy week hosting the McMaster Marauders on Thursday night and travelling to Waterloo to take on the Warriors Sunday afternoon. Their past two games have seen the Lions pick up their first win of the season and settle for their first draw of the season.
Thursday’s game saw the stands of Alumni Field packed with Lions fans as York frosh week descended upon the game. The support seemed to benefit the Lions, as Vanessa Santoriello scored for them ten minutes into the second half with the assistance of Kiyani Johnson, and the Lions prevented the Marauders’ ball out of their net for a final score of 1-0. Despite the low score, this match was not devoid of action and excitement; spectators saw two yellow cards issued to each side.
In the match against the Warriors, the Lions got onto the scoreboard early in the first half when fifth-year striker Kendra Saxton found the back of the Warriors net. Their lead did not last though; Ainsleigh Sedore of the Warriors scored on a corner kick near the end of the first half, bringing the score to 1-1 at half time. Despite out shooting their opponents and the three yellow cards handed to the Warriors, the Lions could not reassert their lead and the game ended in the same tie score from half time.
The Lions now have a 1-1-1 record for the season, putting them in fourth place in the OUA West standings. They will be back on home turf this weekend as they host the Western Mustangs on Friday, September 13 and the Brock Badgers Sunday, September 15. Kick-off is at 6 p.m. for both games.
