The York Lions women’s field hockey team are now the proud owners of a three-game winning streak after their first three games of the 2019 season. They travelled to Kingston on Sunday to take on the Guelph Gryphons and the McGill Martlets. The Lions won 3-0 and 10-0, respectively.
The Lions first game of the day was against one of their biggest opponents in the OUA—the Guelph Gryphons. The Lions battled their way through the first half of the game, which remained scoreless for both sides as neither the Lions nor the Gryphons were able to get near their opponent’s net. That changed in the third period when rookie Lexi Hannah was able to score unassisted for the Lions. Hannah followed this up in the fourth period with two more unassisted goals one minute apart. Her efforts allowed the Lions to claim a 3-0 victory over the Gryphons.
Game two saw the Lions take on the McGill Martlets for the second time this season. The Martlets where once again unable to block any of the Lions’ shots, which allowed the Lions to capitalize on an early lead. Third-year forward Paige Koochin was able to score six minutes into the game, followed by another goal from Kyra McKinnon eight minutes later. By halftime, the Lions were up 4-0 over the Martlets thanks to goals from Marella Greco and Sarah Powell. The Lions had even more success in the last half of the game. Third-year defender Frankie St. Louis was able to find the back of the Martlets’ net in the first minute of the third period, paving the way for Hannah and Hayley Bannister to score one goal each later in that same period. Hannah, Bannister, and Natalie Winter added one goal each in the final period to bring the Lions to a crushing 10-0 victory over the Martlets.
The Lions are currently tied with the Gryphons for second place in the OUA with nine points, trailing just three points behind the first place Varsity Blues.
The Lions will head to London on Saturday, September 21 to take on the Western Mustangs. They will be back at Alumni Field the following day to host the Varsity Blues at 9a.m. and the Waterloo Warriors at 12:30p.m.
