The York Lions women’s rugby team capped off the regular season with yet another win. The visiting Laurier Golden Hawks stood no chance and lost to the powerhouse Lions 78-7 during Friday’s match.
The Lions asserted their dominance right from the start. Second-year Brittany Ediagbonya scored a try one minute in, which was followed by a try from Esther Sivalingam and a conversion from Natasha Naismith.
Jessica Ho of the Lions added her first try of the game four minutes later, and Naismith added her second conversion. This was followed closely by a try from Taylor Bradley, and Naismith once again had a successful conversion. This brought the Lions up to a 26-0 lead halfway through the opening half.
Bradley added another try for the Lions before Abbe Stacey of the Golden Hawks successfully broke through to the Lions’ end for their first and only try of the game.
The Lions took back possession quickly and Michela Stratton added one more try for the Lions in the first half for a huge 40-7 lead over their opponent at halftime.
The Lions kept it up in the second half, adding another 38 points and keeping the Golden Hawks out of their end. Brooke Jensen opened up the second-half scoring for the Lions with a try after regaining possession from the Golden Hawks.
Rayann D’Aguiar, Ally Govier, Ediagbonya, and Stratton all added tries before the end of the game and Naismith kicked the conversions on each of these tries for the Lions biggest win of the season with 71 points over the Golden Hawks.
The Lions now sit at the top of the OUA Russell division heading into playoffs. The schedule for playoffs will be on the OUA website shortly.
