The Lions volleyball teams took on the Ryerson Rams last Wednesday. The Rams swept home court, winning the women’s match 3-1 and the men’s match 3-0.
The first two sets finished close, with 26-24 being the final score in both sets and the Rams on the winning side. The Lions got off to an early lead in the opening set, but after the technical time out the Rams came out strong and the Lions struggled to block their shots. By the end of the set, the teams were tied at 24, and two subsequent attack errors by the Lions gave the Rams the two points they needed to clinch the win.
Set two started in a similar way, with the Lions leading and the Rams catching up after the technical timeout. Calin Wark of the Rams earned their final two points — a kill and a service ace — and this win for the Rams put them one set away from winning the match.
The Lions came out in the third set and crushed the Rams 25-16, shattering the Rams’ hopes of a sweep.
In the end though, it would be the Rams who went on to win the fourth set, with a final score of 25-21.
Leading the Lions in points was Olivia Kim with 17. She also led the team in digs with 15.
When the men took to the court, they also did not fare well against the Rams. They were defeated by a 10-point margin in the first set.
The Lions finished closer to the Rams in the second and third sets at 25-20 in each. Despite a close score mid-game, the Lions could not surpass their opponent.
Andrew Tauhid led the Lions in points, putting up 10. Dan Everton made six digs throughout the match and was the leader on the Lions’ side.
Following last week’s loss, the women’s team still holds onto fourth place in the OUA East, with 9-8 for the season and 18 points. The men drop to 6-10 for the season, keeping them in fifth place with 12 points.
The Lions will be at home this Friday, February 21 for their second-last regular season game. They will take on the Trent Excalibur at 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men respectively. The Lions will head to U of T to take on the Varsity Blues on Sunday, February 23 at 1:00 pm. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
