Silence

Lisa Troutanova
Contributor
Afraid of the voracious silence, I begged you to admit that you were, too, capable of reading lies, aware of my intrusive thoughts wandering my empty mind. You didn’t say anything, except for a murmur of apologies. Every sorry, every sigh pushed us further apart even though we sat side by side watching flustered flames of our cigarettes flirting in a language we didn’t understand but agreed to. Still, our silence hugged me and you, tied our breaths into an iron knot, without a single word.
Without a single word, you tied our breaths into an iron knot, hugged me and agreed to still our silence in a language we didn’t understand. But watching flustered flames of our cigarettes flirting pushed us further apart even though we sat side by side. Except for a murmur of apologies (every sorry, every sigh wandering my empty mind) you didn’t say anything, aware of my intrusive thoughts. Capable of reading lies, I begged you to admit that you were too afraid of the voracious silence.
