The construction of the York University Keele campus subway station will start full-throttle January 2011, and will result in numerous roadway modifications.
According to Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), construction on a detour road will start in November to accomodate the future road closures and allow vehicles to continue to move around campus with ease. An additional road will run through the York Boulevard parking lot and will occupy at least three rows of parking spaces.
The TTC has warned students the road construction operations may cause traffic delays for motorists; however, the transit service disruptions will be minimized as much as possible.
The TTC press release ex- plained Northwest Gate road will be closed starting in January 2011 for the period of the subway sta- tion construction. In addition to the road closures, new temporary bus stops will be created for the Viva, York Regional Transit (YRT) and Brampton Zu?m services; construction on those stops starts this month as well.
New Viva bus stops will remain on Ian MacDonald Blvd., but will be moved north of Vanier Lane, YRT buses will be moved to the west and east sides of Ian MacDonald Boulevard and Brampton Zu?m stop will relocate north of Chimneystack Road January 2011. Students have been notified of the changes thanks to a document released on behalf of Gary Brewer, vice-president finance and administration; it highlights some of the changes the campus will undergo during the construction period.
The document reassures students “at all stages of the project, every possible effort will be made to communicate effectively with the community about construction progress.”
To ensure community members can move around campus safely, traffic control staff will be on site to assist them.
A website has been launched to keep the York community fully informed about advancing construction and the delays in the York campus vicinity – visit www.yorku.ca/subway to stay up to date.
