Like clockwork every year, Frosh Week is poised to take over York campus this fall once again.
However, following a recent death in York’s Village and several on-campus assaults, the undertone of safety concerns cannot be more apparent.
According to vp students Rob Tiffin, York has already begun taking a number of precautions to ensure new students are safe on campus.
“We have already started working on a Good Management Neighbourhood Guide that will be distributed throughout the Village in September by our varsity athletes,” says Tiffin.
The guide will give tips on who to contact in the city about safety tips and concerns.
Wallace Pidgeon of York media added that York admin has committed 800 student leaders to the York Orientation Director’s Association (YODA) who have been briefed by York Security Services with regards to risks and liabilities.
“The leaders and colleges have a meeting before every event about risk assessments and this is alongside the Frosh Squad, which manages all events,” says Pidgeon.
The university will be increasing security and safety precautions in all residences for Frosh Week.
