Toronto Star: York considering handcuffs, batons for security officers

Kate Hudson
Managing Editor
Late Tuesday night, the Toronto Star reported on unconfirmed plans to significantly change how York security officers can engage dangerous individuals, citing “unnamed university sources familiar with the issue”.
The article mentioned “the use of collapsible batons and handcuffs” which “will allow security staff to intervene and also apprehend and detain suspects.” It also mentions the university may have been considering pepper spray at one point, but later scrapped the idea due to legal restrictions.
York Media says the article is a surprise, and will not confirm or deny details at this time.
“If and when there are any changes or policy announcements, we will do so once our employees have been informed,” says Wallace Pidgeon of York Media. “We are consulting with students and faculty and staff and continue to do so with the METRAC report and recommendations.”
Details to follow.
