The Pan Am Games is a multi-sport event attracting thousands from around the world to see athletes from the Americas compete.

In 2015, Canada—specifically Toronto—will be playing host to these thousands of people.

With Toronto mayor Rob Ford just having finalized the details of the 2015 Pan Am Games in Mexico, York is also gearing up to welcome the athletes with a brand-new stadium.

The price tag? Anywhere from $40 to $50 million.

Bud Purves, president of the York University Development Corporation (YUDC), believes the plans to build this new stadium will prove to be a great opportunity.

“This will provide York University students with a new track and field stadium […] whatever is going to be done for the Pan American games is going to be on the condition of legacy,” he says.

Whatever infrastructures that will be built, he notes, will also be used by the citizens of Toronto after the games finish.

The Pan Am Games are expected to bring over 8,000 athletes to over 48 different events. The event will run July 10 to July 26, and will be followed by the Parapan American Games to be held August 7 to August 14 and will be the biggest multi-sport event to be held in Canada.
