After a brief hiatus on the subway construction near the Seymour Schulich Building on York University’s Keele campus, construction on-site has officially resumed as of December 19.

Construction stopped October 11 when a drilling rig weighing thousands of kilograms collapsed, injuring five workers and killing 24-year-old construction worker Kyle Knox.

Carolyn Embury of the Toronto York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) stated in an e-mail that work resumed after the Ministry of Labour—which has jurisdiction over the area since the accident—released the western portion of the accident site.

According to the message, both the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and York University felt “satisfied that construction activity may resume” in the area.

Embury also states that a compensation grouting shaft is set to be constructed in an effort to protect the Schulich Building before the tunnel boring machine arrives. The shaft, however, will be excavated approximately ten meters further away from the Schulich Building than originally proposed.

The Eastern portion of the accident site still remains under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Labour, and no construction will be taking place until the site is released.
