Toronto police are still investigating the bathroom voyeur incident that occurred January 24 where a male intruder was discovered in the women’s washrooms outside Steacie Library.
Detective Rick Ramjattan of the Toronto Police Service’s 31 Division says the police are working with York security to find the perpetrator. Currently, the police are going over all CCTV camera footage from the night of the incident in an attempt to secure more information on the suspect’s appearance.
When asked if the police believe both incidents involved the same suspect, Ramjattan says police do not yet want to declare that it was the same person in both incidents.
“We spoke to all the witnesses,” he says. “The description [of the suspect] was the same as the last washroom incident.” Even then, he points out, that is not enough evidence to make an absolute claim.
Toronto police released an informational video on Youtube January 27 in which Rob Kilfoyle, director of York Security Services, assured viewers that York is working with Toronto police to catch the perpetrator. He advised students to contact Toronto police or York security if they saw suspicious activity on campus.
Wallace Pidgeon of York media expresses his disgust with the incidents.
“It’s a heinous thing. We’re doing all we can to work with the Toronto Police Service,” he says. “[We’re] reaching out directly to students, giving them tips on what to look for, making photos of the suspect available.”
York security has increased security and foot patrols on campus, and tabled in Central Square the previous week to raise awareness.
“If there’s any info, we ask that you please share it,” says Pidgeon. “We want to catch the bad guy.”
The police are currently following up on a few leads and weeding out false claims. At this time, says Ramjattan, further information will remain disclosed due to the nature of the active investigation.
