One can already smell it – sautéed onions grilling on the stove with a dash of minced garlic, and let us not forget the sweet, tender, fresh smell of the squash.
York has partnered with Regenesis at York to introduce the York University Market.
YUM will offer students organic and locally grown produce, ranging from carrots and kale to garlic and onions.
Christopher Bentley, market manager for YUM, says the initiative behind YUM is based on sustainability at York and what this means to health and nutrition on campus, while also providing healthy food options to student at a reasonable price.
YUM will be located in the TEL building, and will run every Thursday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays and reading week, until April, with the possibility of a summer market.
YUM made its debut on October 24 to a warm reception from students, faculty, and staff.
Items sold range from raw produce, baked goods, and prepared food like My Little Dumplings fritters, steamed dumplings, and Mr. Spinners jerk chicken sandwiches.
Vendors were almost sold out by the end. Bentley says they are working on getting fruit vendors in time for YUM’s grand opening on November 7.
The event will also include different workshops that introduce sprouting, preserving, composting, and converting sugars into alcohol. These workshops will also be hosted once a month after the grand opening.
YUM will also host “FreeCycle” events, where visitors will be able to exchange items they don’t want with others.
