Luke Durward was announced as the winner of the university-wide “This is My Time” vision contest on November 20.
Durward, a fourth-year kinesiology major, who beat our 5,029 contestants, was told the news in class by President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri.
Captured on video, Shoukri walked into Durward’s class, read out his vision, and revealed him as the winner.
In his winning entry, Durward wrote that in 2023, as CEO of a fitness and nutrition company, he would make Canada the leader in reversing the growing number of cases of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Durward says it was an overwhelming to hear the president read his vision out loud.
“It’s the same feeling I would get right before a race, only more so,” he says.
The contest, which was open to all students, required participants to write down their vision and submit it to the university.
For Durward, winning a free tuition for a year wasn’t the only perk of entering the contest.
“I figured I might a well give it a shot,” he says. “It gave me a good opportunity to think about what I really wanted.”
