The York University Market, better known as YUM, is back for 2014 with even more to offer to students at York.
New vendors this year include a soup vendor offering up fresh soup, with side servings of of pre-made soup mixes that can warmed up from home. In addition, Eli’s Body Shop will be selling handmade, locally produced health and beauty products.
Launched as a pilot project alongside Regenesis at York, YUM offers the York community with access to a range of sustainably produced food and craft items. This includes fruits, vegetables, baked goods, teas, holistic and nutritional products, and organic cosmetics.
Christopher Bentley, manager of YUM says one goal this year is to keep adding new vendors, with a focus on a new nutritional item every month. In addition, he hopes to promote discussion between students regarding ecological, nutritional, and social issues related to food each week.
Bentley mentioned one of the vendors at Healing Spirit Nutrition will also be having a monthly tutorial on a number of different raw nutritional skills at her table each week.
Bentley says YUM wants to develop more conversations with vendors and students, in hopes of students getting further involved with the community members that attend the market.
“We have a couple of students doing arts and craft projects to help sell their work,” says Bentley. All students need to do is contact us with pictures of their products, what they do and what they are selling.”
“We intend to get student internships with community vendors, whereby students can help the vendors with their business, and students can be able to pick up credits in related courses.”
