York officials confirmed a sexual assault occurred on Thursday, March 6.
Janice Walls of York media says the sexual assault was reported to Toronto Police Services by a community member the following day.
“But there was no bulletin sent out because the assessment was there was no continuing risk to the York community,” says Walls.
Although no security bulletin was sent to students, Excalibur received an anonymous tip regarding the sexual assault on March 10. York media was unable to provide any further details regarding the assault, including the location or specific time it occurred.
According to York’s security protocols, security bulletins are only issued when a serious incident has occurred, with a risk of recurrence.
Bulletins are also released when there is a pattern of less serious incidents such as thefts and robberies, or when York security and police require assistance from witnesses during an investigation.
Also according to security protocol, suspect descriptions are only included in bulletins if information is specific enough that it could lead to the identification, or arrest of a suspect.
