Police arrest Student Centre shooting suspect

Toronto Police Services arrested a 22-year-old man in relation to the March 6 Student Centre shooting, as a result of a collaborative effort with the York community.
Kemon Edwards was arrested on March 13 in the Steeles Avenue West and Jane Street area. Edwards, who was known to police prior to the incident, is currently facing 17 charges, including firearm possession and aggravated assault.
Edwards is also facing charges including careless use of a firearm, discharging a firearm with intent to injure, possession of weapons dangerous to the public peace, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, as well as several drug charges.

Two guns, money, cocaine, and heroin were allegedly seized when police subsequently executed a search warrant. Five other men who have no involvement in the York shooting, aged 16 to 23, were arrested at that time.

David Hopkinson, TPS corporate communications, says once the suspect was identified, police were able to make the arrest promptly.
“We were able to establish who he was and where he would be,” says Hopkinson. “Kemon was then monitored, and at an opportunity where it would afford little to no injury, he was arrested.” says Hopkinson.
As part of the investigation, Toronto Police had urged the York community to come forward with photos or videos of the suspect taken before, during, or after the shooting.
The shooting occurred in York’s Student Centre around 10:45 p.m. One woman was shot in the leg and the other was injured by shrapnel from a bullet. Police confirm the two women weren’t the intended targets.
Both victims, York students, are expected to make a full recovery.
