Q&A with Kristina Mileska

Kristina Mileska presents her 12:10 min short Asteroid, and talks to us about her heartfelt inspiration, almost losing all her footage, and the importance of collaboration.

Q: What is your film about?

Asteroid is about a young girl whose fantasy adventure with her grandfather allows her to come to terms with his illness. My inspiration for the story was my own relationship with my grandparents who have had a strong influence on my love of storytelling. I wanted to tell a simple story about loss and learning to accept loss through a child’s perspective.

Q: What is your creative process like for this film?

This film was incredibly collaborative; lots of people lent their time and talent to making it all come together. Learning to effectively collaborate was what I learned from this process. Overall, the hardest part was achieving a cohesive look for the sci-fi elements on a limited budget but because of the limited budget the editing process was probably the easiest because we could only really shoot what we could afford.

Q: Anything out of the ordinary happen on set?

It wasn’t funny at the time but Cadence, the young actor who played Astrid loved playing with the buttons on the control panel so much so they were destroyed before we shot anything where they were seen. We had to scramble to put them back together before we could shoot the rest of the scene.
