On Tuesday afternoon, a pedestrian involved in a motor-vehicle collision later died from critical injuries while trying to cross Sentinel Road, in the Village.
According to witnesses, the victim was hit while trying to cross the road, and was unresponsive when paramedics arrived.
According to Toronto Police, the victim sustained serious head injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
“The vehicle was traveling southbound on Sentinel Road. The pedestrian crossed the street from west to east, approximately 15 metres south of the intersection with Assiniboine, and was struck by the vehicle,” says Sergeant Duncan Miller of traffic services.
According to John Migliore, deputy commander with Toronto Paramedic Services, TPS received a call about a collision involving a woman in her 20s at 4:24 p.m.
“We obviously have a person that was struck and transported to the hospital. I can tell you it was a Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale Level 1 patient, which means that it was life-threatening,” adds John Farren, district supervisor northwest with Toronto Paramedic Services.
The driver, who remained at the scene, was visibly shaken, according to witnesses, and was later transported to hospital for further evaluation.
Sentinel was closed until 9 p.m., with TTC buses being rerouted so that a collision reconstruction team could investigate the crash site.
“This is quite a dangerous intersection,” says Jaishan Rajakulsingam, who lives near the intersection and came to look over the scene. “They really should put up a signal light for pedestrians.”
Marissa Sputore, a fourth-year psychology student who lives in the Village, believes Sentinel needs a pedestrian crosswalk at Assiniboine. “I tend to be more cautious than usual crossing Sentinel; it’s a very busy road with high traffic all the time, and cars often appear to drive over the speed limit.”
